Gabby

It takes far longer to decide where Queen Nala should sit on the freaking cake, but eventually Kalisha decides on putting the lioness beside Mulan after Gabby suggested she just go in alphabetical order so there’s no favoritism.

When she finally heads back to Colt, she pauses as she catches sight of him. He’s talking to someone. A female someone.

Thoughts of Mazikeen have her picking up her pace, clacking agitatedly across the parquetry floor in the glass slippers she magically created just for tonight. There was no way the Cinderella outfit was going to be complete without them. She doesn’t stop until she slips in beside Colt, wrapping an arm around his waist and placing a soft kiss on the side of his jaw for good measure.

She turns to the young woman with black hair dressed as Ursula from the Little Mermaid, the bell shape of her octopus skirt only emphasizing her tight bodice and itty-bitty waist. “Hi, I’m Gabby. It seems you’ve met Colt.” She dials up her smile. “Who’s mine.”

Colt looks down at her, amusement glinting in his chocolate eyes. “It’s true,” he murmurs. “I’m hers.”

Gabby’s smile goes from strained and artificial to warm and genuine the instant the words are spoken. “And I’m his,” she vows.

Colt presses a tender kiss on her head before turning back to the woman. “Gabby, this is Lydia,” he says, amusement lacing his voice. “She’s been working with Kenna in hunting the Legion. She’s also a witch.”

Gabby knows she should be abashed for her blatant possessiveness, but she’s feeling too gooey about Colt’s response. So instead she smiles as if moving on is the most natural thing in the world. “Wow, you work with Kenna?”

Lydia nods. “Kenna had to leave before she could introduce us—the Order keeps her busy. But she wanted me to connect seeing as we’re both hunting the same target.”

“The Tenth Legion,” Colt growls.

“They’ve been a thorn in our side for a long time,” Lydia says bitterly, adjusting her strapless bodice as if she’s uncomfortable with it. “We’re still not sure what their end game is, but they’re the cause of many a war in this world and they worship evil. If they have their hands on the demonic weapons, then they have something big planned.”

Gabby frowns, wishing she was surprised. Hasn’t every evil entity they’ve fought thirsted for apocalyptic level chaos? “Do you have a lead on them?”

“All of my spells have hit a wall,” Lydia says in frustration. “The Legion has cloaked itself with a powerful warding spell. I don’t think any supernatural creature could breach it.”

Colt’s fingers drum just above Gabby’s hip as he thinks. “But this warding must be originating somewhere.”

Lydia nods. “True, but the exact location is hidden. I can pinpoint the general area, but that’s it. Even if we did find it, breaking through the warding spell would be almost impossible.”

“How can you be so sure?” Gabby asks, thinking that she and Colt have managed to overcome insurmountable obstacles.

Lydia smiles, but the motion is sad.
